When hobbing helical gears, the differential mechanism causes the workpiece to make corresponding additional rotation. The worktable (or column) can be moved along the bed for guiding rolling to adapt to different workpiece diameters and for radial feeding. 

The tool holder of some hobbing machines can also move along the axis direction of the hob, so that the worm gear can be machined by tangential feed method. The large gear hobbing machine is also equipped with a single tooth indexing mechanism, a finger milling cutter holder and a differential reversing mechanism for machining herringbone gears.
